Since 1999, I’ve been lucky to be involved in several fascinating books & reports projects, plus White Paper and Thought Leadership publications that navigate shifting trends in travel and tourism.
From researching a guidebook in Central America to conceptualising a global foodie manual for Shanghai, and from analysing tourism investment in South East Asia to tracking the development of China’s superpower outbound market, it’s been a fun ride.
So, here’s a roundup of some of my books & reports projects:
My book The New Chinese Traveler: Business Opportunities from the Chinese Travel Revolution was published by Palgrave in 2014. It was promoted as:
“An expert insider account of the explosive growth of Chinese tourism, and how international businesses can prepare themselves to benefit from the China travel revolution. Gary Bowerman has worked closely with travel and tourism brands in China and worldwide, giving him unique insights into the mindset of Chinese travellers and the approaches to connect with them. The New Chinese Traveler will help readers around the world to better understand the complexities and challenges of Chinese outbound travel, and create and deliver their own products and services that will meet the rapidly evolving and diversifying requirements of tech-savvy Chinese travellers.”
Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Georg Arlt, Director of the China Outbound Tourism Research Institute (COTRI), reviewed the book, saying:
“Gary Bowerman offers a wide range of insightful snapshots illustrating the multi-faceted reality of China’s outbound tourism, which has already changed the rules of global tourism and will continue to do so in the coming years.”
In 2012, I edited and updated the National Geographic Traveler Beijing & Shanghai Guide.
In 2009, I contributed a chapter on the Shanghai-Lhasa railway to the Time Out Great Train Journeys.
In 2008, I updated the DK Eyewitness Travel Beijing & Shanghai Guide, and in 2009 the DK Eyewitness Travel Top 10 Beijing Guide.
Between 2005-2007, I was the city editor of Luxe Guide Shanghai, and a contributing editor to the debut Zagat Shanghai Restaurants & Hotels Guide.
In 1999, I researched and wrote the Nicaragua and El Salvador chapters for The Rough Guide to Central America, and Rough Guide to the Maya World.
